When we look toward the center of the Milky Way, our view is blocked by thick clouds of gas, dust, and millions of stars in our own galaxy's disk. The Great Attractor is located about 150 to 250 million light-years away, precisely behind this obscuring wall of cosmic dust.
X-Ray Vision
In recent years, astronomers have used X-ray and radio telescopes to peer through the Zone of Avoidance. They discovered that the Great Attractor is not a single giant black hole or a supernatural force. It is a massive supercluster of galaxies known as the Norma Cluster.
This cluster contains thousands of galaxies and an immense amount of dark matter, providing the gravitational muscle to pull our Local Group of galaxies toward it.
The Shapley Supercluster
But the story doesn't end there. Further observations revealed that the mass of the Great Attractor (the Norma Cluster) isn't actually large enough to account for our incredible speed.
It turns out that the Great Attractor itself is being pulled toward an even larger, more distant structure: the Shapley Supercluster. Located 650 million light-years away, the Shapley Supercluster is the most massive concentration of galaxies in our local universe.
Ultimately, we are a tiny part of a massive cosmic river of galaxies flowing through the universe, guided by the invisible hand of dark matter and colossal superclusters.
